Hailing from the pen of Sue Monk Kidd, “The Book of Longings” is a historical fiction novel that follows the story of Ana, a brave and intelligent girl living during the time of Jesus. At the beginning of the story, the main character Ana is betrothed to an older widower that she does not love. As she struggles with her reality, Ana meets Jesus and everything changes. The story reimagines the life of Jesus through the eyes of Ana, who is a strong and daring young woman living in a time of oppression.
I have read about a quarter of the book so far and I am enjoying this feminist approach to the time period. I love Ana already. Sue Monk Kidd has created a consistently potent character whom readers will care about. The desperate turning of pages is a result of great storytelling and I am here for it!
I was lucky enough to score an audiobook version of the book from the local library, so I’ll be listening and reading along with a hard copy as well. Having the audiobook as well allows me to “read” while I’m doing other things like running, laundry or other chores. Needless to say, I am loving this book so far. I’ll be sure to post a full review when I finish it!
