Author Paola Ramos absolutely nailed it with this book.
This book “Finding Latinx” is a collection of interviews, reflections and musings from across the United States about what it means to be Latin in today’s society. She takes a deep dive into the identity, culture and attitudes that are prevalent in the Latinx community and then provides insightful commentary.
The book is broken up into parts that coincide with Ramos’ roadtrip style journey across the United States. Readers will start with experiences in the West and work their way towards the Midwest with stops in the Northeast and South along the way.
In terms of political commentary, the author does not shy away from giving her opinion and providing details to back her stance. I’m not interested in providing my opinion on this specifically as this is a non-political blog… but disclosure for potential readers… it’s a theme woven into the book.
From start to finish, this book had me hooked. I sought out this work purposefully. As a long time resident of Miami, I wanted to hear the author’s opinions on what it means to be Latinx . I wanted to gain a better understanding. I wanted to educate myself so that I can better see, serve and love the people in my community. This book has enabled me to better understand and hopefully support the Latinx individuals around me, and I will be forever grateful for that.
This book had me highlighting passages, dog earring pages (GASP- yes.. I dog ear- don’t @ me) and scribbling notes into the margins of this beautiful book ❤️
I found myself re-reading sections and then stopping to really contemplate the meaning of the passages and how it applies to my life. This one will forever have a place in my heart. Latinx describes my family, friends, and my students. These are the faces that surround me and this book is amplifying their voices.
Recommendations: This book is a must read! This collection of interviews and commentary provides a chance to learn from different members of the Latinx community. It is an opportunity not to be missed!
